Circus-Dance-Theater
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Los Angeles based Troupe Vertigo was founded in 2009 by Aloysia Gavre {Cirque du Soleil} & her husband Rex Camphuis {Pickle Circus}. Their commitment to create work that is an eclectic and refreshing mix of Circus-Dance-Theater encapsulates the imagination in mentally and physically spell-binding ways. Troupe Vertigo’s facility is also home to Cirque School, LA’s premier circus training space, which inspires an appreciation for the circus arts.
This wife and husband team premiered their first show High Water Radio inspired by turn of the century California at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts, produced by the San Francisco Circus Center in 2005. They were honored to have The Tin Hat Trio a well renowned Bay Area band join the show creating a haunting live score. Troupe Vertigo premiered it's first show in Los Angeles in 2010 at the Ford Amphitheater again with a live band, this time with a young rock n' roll group - Nightmare & The Cat. The LA times called this show " A never ending flow of creative expression." The popularity of this show gave them an invite to give a lecture and show at a TED Talk at USC.
The company returned to the Ford Amphitheater in 2012 with Nighthawks: A Film Noir Circus, inspired by American Jazz, Edward Hopper paintings and the gritty streets of crime novels from Hammett to Chandler.
Troupe Vertigo has been collaborating creatively with Cirque de la Symphonie since 2013. Their contributions vary widely from custom show development including Cirque Cinema which premiered in May 2016 at the Philly Pops, Cirque Goes to Broadway with Indianapolis Symphony. Their theatrical sensibilities have helped to evolve new audiences to Symphonic Concerts.
2016 brought the creation of their newest work to life entitled TABLEAUX for a 3 show run produced by the Dance Resource Center at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles. Tableaux features five women harnessing their physicality to the extreme. By incorporating contortion, dance, aerial acrobatics and humor they explore the concepts of confinement, as we are all asked to put our selves into boxes of limitation either by society or ourselves, as a way to help to define our potential.
Due to their Los Angeles home and having Cirque School as their sister company Aloysia & Rex's expertise are used often for the film & television industry. Most recently for Rebel Wilson's aerial performance for Pitch Perfect 2 which was coached and choreographed by Aloysia. Both Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz unitized Cirque School resources not only for circus instruction but for character background research.
