About The Company

Founded in 2009 by Aloysia Gavre of Cirque du Soleil and Rex Camphuis of Circus, Film and TV production, Troupe Vertigo is a Los Angeles-based theatrical circus company creating an eclectic fusion of circus, dance, and theater that ignites the imagination through visually striking and physically spellbinding performances.

Troupe Vertigo’s work spans theaters, concert halls, festivals, and special events, bringing a distinctly theatrical sensibility to contemporary circus. The company has become especially recognized for its collaborations with world-class symphonies, helping to reimagine the concert experience through the integration of circus artistry, movement, and storytelling while cultivating new audiences for symphonic performance.

Their unique perspective on the circus arts has led to speaking engagements and educational collaborations with organizations including Center Theatre Group, Directors Lab West, TEDx, and the Chicago Contemporary Circus Festival. Their work has also been featured in the cover story of Dance Teacher Magazine and in the book Ordinary Acrobat.

Troupe Vertigo premiered its first production, Big Top for a New Generation, in 2010 at the Ford Amphitheatre alongside the rock band Nightmare and the Cat featuring Django and Sam Stewart. In 2012, the company returned to the Ford Amphitheatre with Nighthawks: A Film Noir Circus, inspired by American jazz, the paintings of Edward Hopper, and the shadow-filled worlds of crime writers Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.

In 2016, Troupe Vertigo created TABLEAUX, originally presented by the Dance Resource Center at the Bootleg Theater. The work featured five women navigating themes of confinement and freedom while stranded upon an island of boxes — exploring both societal expectations and personal limitations through movement and physical storytelling.

Troupe Vertigo is also home to Cirque School, Los Angeles’ premier circus training space, dedicated to inspiring appreciation for the circus arts for “Anybody with Any Body.”

Because of their Los Angeles roots and the close connection between Troupe Vertigo and Cirque School, Aloysia Gavre and Rex Camphuis are frequently sought after for film and television projects. Their work includes coaching Rebel Wilson for her aerial performance in Pitch Perfect 2, as well as supporting Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz through circus instruction and character research for the film Water for Elephants.
